CHAPTER 1

A CHANGE OF ATTITUDE

I was sitting in the National Park adjacent to Syntagma Square in the center of Athens, Greece. Three children were playing near the bench where I was sitting. They were playing “basketball”, trying to throw a ball into a garbage can nearby. The older boy, about 7 years old, had thrown the ball in four times so far, and his young girl-friend also had two baskets. But his little sister, who looked to be about five years old, had not been able to make a single basket. The game continued with great earnestness, with great joys, and devastating disappointments. The quantity and quality of the air we take into our lungs is affected by the amount of mucus which lines the inner passages of the respiratory system. I would like to complete this book with a brief discussion concerning some of the inner conflicts which develop as one follows any system of self improvement or spiritual discipline. It is not absolutely necessary for such conflicts to arise, but in 98% of the cases they do. In some they manifest as subtle inner tensions, but in others as deep rooted inner conflicts which lead to self rejection, unhappiness and a resulting lack of stability on the path. IMPORTANCE OF BREATH

Life is not possible without breath. Life in the physical body begins with the first breath and ends with the last. The Greek word for lungs, «pneumonia», finds its roots in the word «pneuma» or spirit. In English we say inspire and expire. That is to bring the spirit in and to send it out. In esoteric Christianity one finds the word «Holy Breath» used interchangeably with «Holy Spirit». It is through the Holy Breath that we receive the Holy Spirit and are transformed. WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR REALITY

Who is responsible for our happiness? Who is responsible when we are unhappy? Who is responsible for our life? For the way we spend our time and energy, for the situations we get into, for the way we relate to others and the way we feel within ourselves? A superficial glance at the subject may bring answers such as, my husband or wife, children, parents, the government, the economic system or a wide variety of other external factors. When we depend on these external factors for our feelings of happiness, security and self worth, we become vulnerable to them and truly it seems that they create our reality. We are unhappy to the extent that we place the power and responsibility for our happiness and security outside of ourselves. When we expect that a relationship, money, profession or some other object, situation or relationship is going to make us more than temporarily satisfied, we are living in a very fragile illusion.
